Parkour and Freerunning in Northwest Arkansas
Parkour and Free Running are sports that use jumps, flips, and tricks in a much more fluid and creative way to gymnastics. Athletes learn how to use various objects to perform skills versus the events of gymnastics. While the terms are generally used interchangeably Parkour is used moving from one place to another as efficiently as possible. Free Running is using an area to flip and perform tricks to one’s content. We combine both into one class.
Our hope is to train young athletes to train with the aspiration of one day competing in a Parkour competition. Competitions are slowly emerging in the U.S and with FIG(Federation of International Gymnastics) adopting Parkour as a gymnastics discipline as well as the WFPF(World Federation of Parkour and Freerunning) running competitions throughout the U.S. it will only get bigger!
While some programs teach under a “just throw it” mentality we like to use training styles closer to competitive gymnastics. This training style using progression and drills to help kids succeed not only in the immediate skill they want, but the skills they will want down the road. “Just throw it” training tends to get kids skills quickly but stunts their ability to do more difficult skills later.
Some Gyms offer programs named “Extreme Gymnastics” or “Urban Gymnastics” for kids to join. These programs teach Parkour and Free Running but are banned from using these terms because they are not actually insured to teach Parkour and Free Running and most instructors are not certified/qualified to teach. The Phoenix Academy can say confidently that we are the first Parkour program with a WFPF certified instructor in Northwest Arkansas.
